Sepp Straka delivered an unforgettable performance at the Honda Classic to win his first PGA Tour Event while wearing the new SQAIRZ SPEED™ golf shoes. The victory was also the first time an Austrian has ever won a PGA Tour Event.
In the first round of competition all eyes were on Matt Jones, the defending champion from last year. However, Jones’ performance this year was not enough to make the cut and soon focus shifted to Daniel Berger, who emerged as the early front runner.
In the first three days of the tournament Berger played impressively, coming into the final round with a five-shot lead at 11 under par. Trailing just behind Berger were four golfers tied for second place: Sepp Straka, Shane Lowry, Chris Kirk, and Kurt Kitayama. Then the final round took place and blew all expectations out of the water.
An extremely strong performance was needed to catch up to Daniel Berger and that is exactly what Sepp Straka did on the final day of the Honda Classic. Straka made birdies on holes 14, 16, and 18 to shoot four-under 66, finishing the tournament at 10 under par. Straka ranked first in strokes gained off-the-tee and gained nearly five shots on the field. His combined distance (310-yard average) and accuracy (a field-leading 83.9% fairways hit) led him to his inaugural PGA Tour win.
The 18th hole was particularly difficult for all the players as heavy rain started to fall shortly after Straka’s massive 334-yard tee shot, the longest drive of the week on the 18th. Despite the torrential downpour Straka stayed cool and collected on his approach, flushing a six iron from 190 yards over water to set up a beautiful birdie. SQAIRZ’s traction, waterproof material, stability, and comfort all came into play during that challenging 18th hole.
For his win, Sepp Straka took home the winner’s share of the $8 million dollar purse, $1.44 million. Not only was this Straka’s first PGA Tour Event win, this is also the first time an Austrian has won a PGA Tour Event. Straka has moved up to 14th on the current FedExCup points list and has secured his place in the Masters Tournament in April 2022. This first PGA Tour Event won by an athlete wearing SQAIRZ golf shoes comes on the heels of John Daly and son’s Champions Tour victory at the recent PNC Championship.
SQAIRZ golf shoes are well known for their technology including their patented square-toe design, unparalleled stability, waterproof material, comfortable inner material, Sta-Put Laces, wide base, and strategic cleat placement. All of these elements came into play during Straka’s performance, allowing him to clinch the win.
- The added distance generated by SQAIRZ’s increased ground force connection facilitated Sepp’s massive 334-yard drive on the 18th hole.
- The accuracy created with the square-toe design helped Sepp to hit the ball right down the middle again and again.
- The waterproof material kept Sepp’s feet dry, even after his 200 yard walk to the green on the 18th hole.
- SQAIRZ’s wide base and cleats insured traction on and off the tee, even during heavy rainfall.
- The comfort of SQAIRZ’s shoes allowed Sepp to walk 18 holes all four days with ease.
